Extended Practice Brief #5: Lasercut/ Embossing Business Card [Ruban X Graphic Design]

Going forward with the embossing design finish that me and Ruban talked about instead of the plastic once I've started to do some embossing practices with the final logo design that we've decided on, on some initial paper stock choices that I got available to me.

Paper (Canford)
  • Gunmetal
  • Dreadnough Grey
WWW:
  • It's a very subtle emboss which is good as a nice finish texture to the business card.
  • Both papers work really well in highlighting the embossing

Need to Refine:
  • Logo laser cut and design needs to be slightly bigger in order for the design to be laser cut properly as they are too small and are getting burnt off completely during the process.
  • Have to take out small text on the logo (Photography) on the curve shape to make it simplier and avoid burns
  • Need to make it centred on the actually logo printed on the back of the business card?
  • Make the email, phone number and insta handle bigger, its awkwardly small to read
Thoughts & Reflection:

I thinks it's an okay attempt so far, it was quite hard to centre the plate on the actual paper so some of the prints are over layed, also it's good that I've tested it on similar paper size and weight that I want the business card to be in so I have a better idea of how big I need to make the embossing again. Also, I think another reason why it's not embossing as well is because I'm not wetting the card stock, but I have no choice since it has text so I'll have to make do. I'll have to show it to Ruban and what she thinks and ways in improving it.

Extended Practice Brief #5: Email Exchange [Ruban X Graphic Design]

After the first meet up with Ruban and showing her my ideas for the branding and discussing which direction we should take next and the other collateral that she want for the time before our second meeting we decided to communicate through email to keep the work going and so were both aware of what we're both doing and thinking for the collab as well as doing design decisions together.
During our email convo we talked and decided on:
  • postcard pictures
  • final business card design to create physical mock up finally!
  • going for a more appropriate packaging design (tracing paper? or something soft and opaque as opposed to plastic)
Thoughts & Reflection:

During this time I have decided to pick and buy the stock that I need in order to create more realistic mock ups for Ruban to see in our next meet up. I was also glad that she agreed with my suggestion to change the plastic packaging to something more 'natural' as I just didn't feel like it fitted to the aesthetic and the style that we are pushing for. I feel that the plastic feels too commercial and takes away the pleasant organic feel that her photos convey as well as the overall vibe and tone of her personal branding. Also, as now we have a final business card design I will start to experiment on which greys I will choose and how I will have to work out the embossing on the card for her to see how it may look physically too. So far I think this collab is going really well and in a steady phase I'm hoping to create finals a week before their hand in giving her time to take photos of the end collateral and handing it in on time of if she wants some refinements we can do them really quickly.

Extended Practice Brief #6: Business Cards Initial Ideas [Nina X Graphic Design 2]

Following our first meet up and my initial logotype ideas, I developed some initial business card ideas. I chosen pastel colour palettes to emphasise Nina's style and the playfulness that she wanted to convey in her business card.
  • Pastel Pink - cheerful very girly
    • bright and inviting
    • works well with the black logotype
  • LAYOUT - centred, works really well for utilising the big space in comparison to the amount of information and text available.
    • It focuses the audience on the text quickly while keeping a simple and sleek layout that also corresponds to the logo on the back of the card.
    • Left aligned – quite awkward? too much white space wasted
    • Feels like it needs supporting elements like illustration etc. to help it stand properly within the design.
  • Pastel Coral/Pink - a hint of chill character to the business card
    • still inviting and fun
    • also works well with the burgundy
    • modern tone, not exactly typical shade of pink
    • Burgundy logotype quite a bold colour which is still inviting and cheerful. It has a sense of luxury that isn't over the top and a classic feel that when used in the contemporary logotype gives it an overall modern tone to it.
  • LAYOUTLeft aligned with Name and contact info spaced top to bottom
    • Instantly feels wider and fuller on the page
    • A good space to separate the info clearly while giving the illusion of filling the gap. It gives a good balance for the information to be laid out on to the card.
    • horizontally centred – really effective in focusing the audiences attention to the important information on the card
    • Familiarity – as audiences will be more familiar with reading from left to right, just like how the hierarchy of information is designed on the card.
    • good balance of white space and used space on the card dimensions as well
    • It fits will with the centred logo on the bag
    • Gives the audience a clear direction and ease to navigate the business card (flip to the left then read from left to right) fluid.
  • Yellow - clear contrast to the burgundy
    • joyful atmosphere
    • makes it look like a business card for a food company though
    • doesn't emphasise a modern photography, fashion commercial tone
  • LAYOUT – centred, works really well for utilising the big space in comparison to the amount of information and text available.
    • Illustrative background – struggling with the awkward white space, utilising the feather motif gave the business card a much more dynamic and inviting atmosphere, hints at the fine art style that Nina also works with at the same time also supports the logo by contrasting it's clean and simplistic design with something very free flowing.
Thoughts & Reflection:

Out of the three I very much prefer the centred info layout with the third logotype and illustrative background as I though it's a good balance between having a very clean and contemporary logotype with a background that entices   people and make people appreciate the business card more. The centred layout is also very familiar and easy therefore I think it's the most appropriate. It's simple bu functional. Also, it's easy to alter especially if Nina wants to put her website URL on future business cards as well. I preferred the coral pink colour as I think it's a slightly unique and stylish colour that fits the aesthetic and tone that we are aiming for the business card and the brand identity. In my meet up with Nina, hopefully we can decided on the colour and layout of the business card so that I'll start on developing physicals for them.

Extended Practice Brief #6: Logotype Initial Ideas [Nina X Graphic Design 2]

I've created some initial drawing sketches for Nina's logo and used the theme of 'playful and soft' as my main themes using circular and soft shapes to further emphasise this as well. Instead of a logo, I actually leaned more towards logotypes as her name is really interesting to play around with and i figured to make it less cliche especially with the 'feather' as a part of the design rather than just placed with it giving it more purpose other than its aesthetic also, I'd rather have it actually as a supporting point of design rather than the main one.

I leaned more towards using soft and curvy sans serif (Work Sans) lettering in my sketches as I thought it worked effectively as a very playful and approachable logotype at the same time; whilst also experimenting with serif typefaces (Mazius Review) that fit a very commercial and editorial feel, just like her photography style.

As I've sketched more, I've integrated the feather in the actually letters, replacing the dot of the eye with it as I found it really fun and subtle and at the same time working effectively with her style.  Overtime, I actually started to prefer these styles, especially the once with the serif type as I felt it was more fitting to her fine art and fashion photography aesthetic. I feel like the serif logotype feels more
  • chic
  • sleek
  • modern and contemporary but still playful and inviting
  • somewhat luxurious and has a graceful aesthetic to it
  • quite editorial and commercial too

From the sketches these are the onces that I preferred:
  • very simplistic and minimal
  • a hint of playfulness and subtle nuance of the feather
  • dynamic through the altered 'l' and 'o' to the logotype
  • quite editorial and commercial fit for fashion photography aesthetic and style

  • minimal again but a bit more stylish
  • gives quite a 'perfume' 'accesory' brand feel though, doesn't quite feel her
  • wide kerning gives it a very 'serious' tone too
  • professional but TOO professional
  • not as approachable and playful.

  • very playful
  • going for an emblem style/look - inspired by designer brooches and pins
  • something quite cute
  • looks too clique though?
  • but circular motif works will to create a very inviting and joyful tone to it
  • TOO MUCH going on with the feather
  • the serif clashes with the shaping too much.
Thoughts & Reflection:

Personally I think the first designs work the best but, I'd also need to have Nina's opinion on it on our next meeting. I'll also start implementing these designs on business cards soon.

Extended Practice Brief #5: First Meet Up [Nina X Graphic Design]

I finally met up with Nina and got all the details on what she wanted me to create for her:

  • Use Nina Lou as main name for business card
  • Business Card
  • Watermark
  • Logo
  • Something curvy, neat and simple, playful
  • Bright and colourful but still muted – pastel colours
  • NO GREEN
  • Include a feather (something personal for her)
  • Variations of logo?

Thoughts & Reflection:

After meeting up with her, I kind of got the idea of what she wanted and she also showed me the kind of photography she does (Fashion, fine art, commercial) so knowing that i have to make sure the logo is quite general at the same time still correspond to her and her personal style and brand. We've decided to keep in contact through Instagram and share a pinterest board so we both know the visuals we are leaning towards and what we don't want at the same time so it's easier for me and her to communicate our ideas as well.

Extended Practice Brief #5: Initial Packaging Designs [Ruban X Graphic Design]

*scan notebook sketches

I sketched some packaging ideas as inspired from the Pinterest board that we've done together and how we can utilise tracing in order to use it as packaging.

Ideas:
  • Individual packaging for each postcard?
  • Standard 'letter envelope' (3)
  • Make it curved? more organic and softer (1)
  • Mixture of card and tracing paper - double packaging
  • Overall packaging giving it the 'travel pack' aesthetic - everything packed together in one parcel (4)
1)

2)

3)4)

Out of all the designs I prefer the 'package' layout the best as I think its the most effective and practical out of all of them, it keep all of them in one place without having to be unpackage each postcard one by one if they're individually enveloped.  I thought it'd be also put a title on it as I've asked Ruban for a manifesto or title of the overall concept so I can use it as the basis for the type design which was 'Manufactured Structure'.

Thoughts & Reflection:

I've sent Ruban pictures and scans of the packaging and asked for her opinion on which one she prefers and she preferred the 'package' design the best which was great as I can start to physically develop it now so I can show her how it will turn out in person and how the collateral will be packaged together.

Extended Practice Brief #5: Progress Meet-Up [Ruban X Graphic Design]

After my first meet up we've established a better understanding of which direction the branding should take.
  • More greys and muted colours
  • minimal and clear
  • small
  • quite organic
I've refined the business cards more towards the style that she wanted choosing grey and black as the main colours. She also mentioned that she preferred it to be portrait instead so I had to change the layout of the design in accordance to the portrait design and through our email exchange we decided on the final business card layout.

I showed her physical business card developments with the embossing done but I mentioned the difficulty that some of the type is too small so I'll have to make the logo bigger which she was fine about. I used 5 pt type for the info text at the back which I thought may have been too small of a choice and making her check it as well she agreed it should be bigger.

I used two colours for the business card which was Gunmetal 300gsm with a much blueir tint and Dreadnough Grey from Canford. I personally liked both papers as I thought they fit her aesthetic so I showed her and made her choose which one she preferred but surprisingly she liked the Gunmetal which was bluer than I thought. Though I do still think that it fit the whole collateral anyways.

For the postcard I decided to print it on two paper stocks
  • Extra White 250gm
  • Opaque Premium Wave Pure White Shimmer 250 gsm
I personally liked it on the Shimmer paper better as I thought the shine of the paper adds a premium quality to the postcard along with how smooth it is and how it highlights her photographs very nicely. She also liked the shimmer better therefore we've finalised the paper stock and design for the postcard to this.

Thoughts & Reflection:
It was a really productive meet up as we have finalised most of the collateral that we're going to make and it also makes it easier for me to make them physically now as I already know what she wants and her style. So far, it's been going really good as a collab as we've definitely agreed on all of the things that we discuss and suggest. Hopefully the next time we see each other I'll be giving her the final designs or nearly finished physical collateral as we don't have much time left before their deadline.

PPP: Work Placement Research

*I have initially decided to want to do my work placement during Easter, therefore I have decided to want to send out my work placement emails around end of February/early March.

Field that I want to experience:
  • Branding - It's something that I am increasingly becoming passionate about and a field that I am looking into applying into, so I would like to work within studios/agencies that have lots of brand identity experiences.
  • Print/Publication - Also another style I'd like to do more is publications/prints/editorials
Studios
  • Checkland Kindleysides - High in demand and has done branding/ strategies that I find really exciting and conceptually driven e.g. their Byron rebrand.
  • KISS Branding - Branding agency in Leeds, small team (led by two people)  - it's local and I'm really interested in similar projects that they've done as they are quite culturally driven in their branding and design which is also similar to the path that I want to pursue, so doing a placement here would be a great way for me to experience branding for real life brands that I can critically think for and create meaningful culturally driven designs for.
  • Glorious Creative - Manchester based - a big company as well like Checkland Kindleysides, therefore do wide variety of styles like Branding/branding strategy, editorial, packaging - which are the fields that I want to know more of. Doing a placement on a big agency like this would also give me a chance to experience how a bigger company operates and how each team communicate with one another and the work that is allocated to each member.
Thoughts & reflections:
Looking at these 3 studios, I will send them placement emails in hopes to receive a reply back - or not.

Extended Practice Brief #6: New Photography Collab? [Nina X Graphic Design]

Another photographer (Nina) contacted me to do the collab together but I wasn't really sure if I was able to do two projects that are the same at the same time bearing in mind their deadline is coming up soon and I've still got to make Ruban's whole collateral. But, I still decided to give it a try and ask her what she wants to do to see if I can make it regardless, I figured it'll still be a great opportunity for me to work on more branding  stuff and how two different photographers have different styles and how different my approach will be.

Knowing what she wanted made, I decided to do a collab with her too as it's not too much on my plate anyways. We decided to meet yesterday at 1 however she had to cancel so we had to meet next week instead. Hopefully though, even though we're running out of time, I can still make some really well refined designs for her and print and photograph them on time.

Extended Practice Brief #5: Design Development Business Cards & Postcard Refinements [Ruban X Graphic Design]

After my first meet up with Ruban I had to make major changes to the business card, instead of pale muted colours she preferred greys and blacks and something very minimal therefore I had to change the designs in those business cards. She also mentioned wanted it portrait therefore I had to change it to that layout as well.

Here are the designs I made:

1)2)

3)4)5)

6)7)

Unlike landscape business card, it felt like I had more space to play around with the information I had. The idea for these business card layouts was to make it feel like a poster, adding dynamic elements to it like wide kernings (1-7) for in order to also make the space feel full, despite the minimal design and colour. I also tried to make it two toned (1-5) as Ruban mentioned an interest in it, and I think it kind of adds some depth to the business cards however pushing more with the idea, I don't think it work as well as I thought as they became distracting and out of place instead. Laying out the information in contrasting directions gave the business card better spacial feel especially (2 & 7) and with the logo in the circle (which is going to be embossed) gives the illusion of it being 'full'.
Personally, I liked 2 & 7 but I'll email Ruban the developments to see which ones she likes and start producing physical development for our next meet up.

Extended Practice Brief #5: Crit [Ruban X Graphic Design Collab]

We had a group crit with Nick today and talked about the progress we are doing in our briefs.

My Problem
  • I don't want Ruban's brand and identity to look really cliche but at the same time I want the design to clearly showcase her and her style as a photographer.
Feedback:
  • Her photography and her portfolio are her portfolio.
  • Be more subtle about it.
  • Be more adamant about the direction of the collaboration  – it's not necessarily making what she wants, but making what is appropriate an effective for her (and it is not necessarily what she wants too)
  • Be more persuasive and direct her to something more appropriate.
  • It's looks too much like a children's brand, too soft the colours don't really match the vibe.
How I'm Tackling This
  • Create a better direction for the style and visual of the brand
  • be more subtle
  • Do other ideas, and state why they are a better option when showing it to her
  • Lack of colour may be better

Thoughts & Reflection:

Overall, it was a really good crit, not only did I get helpful feedback but I also got to see other peoples work and briefs which was really varied and interesting, I also liked how some people presented their work and how detailed they talked about there work (Liam) which gave them really nice conversations and feedback from us and Nick, as this is something that I really lack so I also want to take some pointers from them and apply it to how I present my work to get sufficient and more helpful feedback too.

Extended Practice Brief #5: 1st Meet Up [Ruban X Graphic Design Collab]

First meet up with Ruban my photography collaborator.

Intended Discusion:
  • Which business card design do you like the most and what to refine further?
  • Any other ideas on how the business card can be produced?
  • How many business cards would you like to be produced?
  • Any other collateral you'd want to be created?
  • How do you feel about creating a publication to go with the business card?
Outcome:
  • Landscape style was chosen
  • Take out the facebook handle as it's not really used a lot
  • Final Information on the business card: Full name, Phone Number, Email and Instagram handle
  • Prefer a grey/black colour palette
  • Instead of embossing clear or opaque plastic business card is preferred and had in mind already
  • Maybe create a 'travel pack' for branding - post card, stamp stickers
  • Possible publication to go along with the branding (with photos from Thailand)
  • Probably around 30 business cards?
Thoughts & Reflections:
It was a really good start to the collab and got some good feedback. I thought embossing would be a god idea, but I actually prefer the clear business car that she suggested and it also goes well with the business card design that she chose. The only thing is it wont have a back design since it's clear so i'll have to readjust all the info onto panel and also change the colour palette. I also need to check where I can print clear plastic card since James in the print room only have water based inks so the ink wont dry/ or only print on acetate which is too flimsy. Screen printing it would be time consuming and has the risk of getting it wrong as well, so the best option will probably be online.

I also like the travel pack idea which could be really nice and a nice way to create a cohesive collection of her photos and part  of her brand. Overall, it was a good first meet up, the next time we meet i'll be showing her a more refined version of the business card as well as designs for the travel pack and publication as well when she sends me her photos for usage.

Extended Practice Brief #5: Research [Ruban X Graphic Design]

  • Plastic Card

Primary research

Photographer's current social media/ website – Primary research have been done such having face to face conversation with the photographer in order to further understand her practice and the style of photography (film photography focused on travel and architecture, documentary photography; quiet nostalgic and sentimental) that she does in order to portray a clear brand identity for her which she can use and integrate to the visual mediums that she uses to promote herself, e.g. Instagram, email, website and business card. Research onto the current style of work format e.g. Instagram and website that she does as well in order to balance the current style with the identity, leading to look into brand identity and design that achieved a similar outcome to the intended brand identity for the photographer.

Shared Pinterest

Me and Ruban also created a shared Pinterest board in order to know the kind of styles that we both like and prefer as well as so I can show her my ideas on what I'd want the branding identity to look like. The board really helped as it gave us the opportunity to talk to each other visually and I could also use it to show her examples of work that inspire me to make her branding and her opinions through it when we aren't meeting face to face also helping me to create designs faster.

Secondary research

May Flower? – an invitation and stationary shop that specialises in wedding events. Specifically, they create invitations, set designs and photography which eludes to modern and stylish weddings through their use of muted nostalgic colours highlighting the importance of nature which is also reflected in their packaging designs ranging from card, to light papers such as tracing/translucent papers. The style of photography is also reflected throughout the website layout and product photography further emphasising the brands aesthetic and the style of service that they provide to their customers, making it an coherent and successful branding identity for the shop.

U-P (Sonia Rentsch Identity) – an Australian design/branding agency, that create Sonia Rentsch’s (art director and artist’s) brand identity. The agency created an effective and cohesive identity using ideas from Rentsch’s own style of geometric structures and everyday objects. This is also shown through the production of a publication showcasing Rentsch’s work alongside a website in which Rentsch can easily alter and update according to her projects.

Extended Practice Brief #5: Initial Ideas [Ruban X Graphic Design Collab]

Before meeting Ruban this Wednesday I create initial business card ideas that she may be interested in and some of the designs that we talked about before as well.

What she wants:

  • Business card
  • Travel related or inspired
  • Maybe by train ticket of passport etc.
My Ideas:
  • Business card inspired by train ticket information design
  • Looking at her instagram, her work is very calm and 'earthy' so I decided to choose a muted colour 'pale green' to match her tone of voice. s
  • Maybe emboss the back of the business card with some of her negatives (as she mentioned during the Photography X Graphic design Collab that she paints on them) it'd be a nice way of introducing her style on her business cards.
  • Serif type implying traditional stye (analog photography) while Sans serif considers the simplistic and calm tone of her photography style.
Drafts of initial business cards

Initial Ideas
  • Portrait Style – Simplistic Design and appropriate to showcase embossing pattern on the back.
  • San serif type (Sofia Pro Regular 22 pt) - inviting, friendly yet quiet and tonal, fits with the muted aesthetic style.
  • Stamp motif (not necessarily a logo but can be a prominent illustration to the business card designs), shows her interest in travel photography in a direct way.

  • Landscape Style – more traditional business card design
  • Subtle reference to train ticket design with how the information are laid out on the page.
  • 'RBN KTN' for example, a direct inspiration from the location short initials on train ticket and boarding passes.
  • style wise its the most familiar which may be effective to not go overboard with the design.

  • Again, landscape but contemporary
  • Minimal and irregular grid, makes good use of the white space
  • Feels really spacy and airy; looks sophisticated and high end
  • Feels more corporate than freelance though.
Along with these initial ideas I also have ideas for possible publication design that we could collab on e.g:
FFaswin Magazine

Cereal Magazine

Gold Dust
  • Looking more towards documentary photography e.g. Gold dust Publication or more editorial with Cereal Magazine inspo
  • Sleek and clean
  • Full Bleed photos or more irregular layers

 Thoughts & Reflections:
I think it'll be a substantial amount to show and start our collab so I can get an idea of what kind of style she is actually looking for, as well as show to her how I work and what I want from this collab as well. Hopefully, it'll go well and we get started with this collaboration asap.

Extended Practice Brief #4: [Nanyang Day 7] *Presentation Day

After bringing all our collateral together we presented to Amber, Simon, Andrew and Nick.

Final Presentation
We presented our presentation by setting it up in the year 2100 by showing examples of what has happened from the year 2020 e.g. flood in Leeds and Singapore and Venice and we imagined how people have adapted to these changes, hence why we have come up with the tour agency idea.
We also clearly stated what the goal we are to solve (CLIMATE ACTION) as it was one of the feedbacks that we got, and we split up the parts according to who did the collateral.

Overall, it was a good presentation I think, and everyone did really well in explaining the parts that they have done.

WWW:

  • We also did a better job in presenting our idea and everyone got the message of our presentation and why we chose the tone of voice and methods that we had.
  • Variety of outcomes was impressive considering the amount of time we had to make them.
  • Idea is unique and really interesting.
EBI:
  • Could be expanded to a game development/ app as well?
  • Design decisions could be further considered e.g. waterproof stock, is there a need for a physical outcome?
  • Images could've been more 'time accurate' e.g. actually put images of the cities being submerged, as it could be quite confusing if photos from 2020 of before submersion are marketed to the audiences.
Thoughts & Reflections:

We did earn 2nd place-ish which I was satisfied about considering the amount of time we had to create all the collateral that we had for our idea. It was also a really good collaboration and was really fun and interesting to see how people forma  different country and course tackle a brief and present to an audience. If given another opportunity like this, I would definitely do it again.

PPP: Portfolio Crit

Today's portfolio crit...
  • Limited time to look at someone's portfolio and answer the three questions that they asked on their notes.
  • 10 mins, 8 mins, 6 mins, etc.
FEEDBACK!

 My three questions:
  • Is there any more information for the rationale I can add? Is it too short/concise?
  • Are the images too crowded? Should I put them on separate pages?
  • Is the portfolio size awkward? (A3) Should I make it wide (like presentations style? Is the rhythm of the projects okay?

MORE GENERAL QUESTIONS FROM ALEC:
  • What works well?
  • what could work better?
  • What would you like to see more of?

Overall I:
  • found that people liked the colour scheme that I used as part of my brand identity, they think it works really well and is consistent. "obvious and clear with what your work is about and aims to do..."
  • Some layout are not consistent and are awkward e.g. publication - NEEDS TO BE CHANGED
  • Change size to screen width instead of A3 (fit for sending digital portfolio but also for physical portfolio).
  • Add contact details
  • More album cover work, vinyl cover ? cassette tape j card?
