Idea #1
- Working stereotypes against itself - e.g. Showing the same pics of the same garment/ ethnicity being portrayed but comparing it to how its supposed to look and how it's being appropriated *Can create a 'shock factor? which can get audiences intrigued to read more and engage with the publication more at the same time, it also gives them the information I want them to take away from the publication in a straightforward manner.
Idea #2
- Informative and Educational approach(?) - as mentioned in our practical brief crit, it could be a visual manifestation of the research that I did in my essay. Can showcase: appropriation, stereotyping, tokenism etc. in a more educational and 'standard' book form. Would it be type heavy? Serious but Contemporary. *Educates the audiences in a more structured and educational way, would be appropriate for keen readers? Having type with images would engage the readers in a more and possibly make them understand the context and message better rather than abstractly and putting their own subjective view on it. It good to be subjective, but giving the right context would direct their view to the right understanding of the message of the publication.
Idea #3
- 'Interactive Book??? - showcasing and highlighting appropriation and stereotypes through altering original photos which are appropriating East Asian culture and comparing them side by side, letting the readers take in the differences and realising it. Can be really drastic and distorted. *May make make the audience rethink their perspective on the adverts that they see, make them more aware of the subtle and obvious difference that can and can't infer to appropriation and or stereotyping.
Production Method
- Perfect Binding - professional and slick finish, appropriate for exhibition display as well as can infer to the editorial spread in magazines for High Fashion brands. Appropriate functionality, the most effective in showcasing the visuals and informative, if it was hand-made it would take way the slick contemporary aspect which fits the tone and context behind the publication.
- Gloss? - similar to contemporary magazines, publications, books
- Soft cover
- Black cover? - minimal, neutral, if colour (possibly colours that evoke the presence of culture eg. orange, green, red?)
Thoughts & Reflection:
I think so far although the are just rough ideas, I think that they do answer the brief in some way and I can definitely expand on them and think more deeply and in detail once I choose the idea that I want to use. Also, in the crit it'll be useful if people can give me feedback on how I can expand on these ideas and which one is the strongest and most appropriate to go with so that I can start developing it already.
