Extended Practice Brief #7: Irrational Fears [More Publication Development]

Refinement and development to the publication.

Now I have started to add colour and images in relation to each topic.
  • front page - black with a black and white cropped image of face masks shown in public during the SARS pandemic drawn with encouraging words by children. It's not as noticeable at first but as you concentrate on the image you can read messages such as "Best wishes". I wanted to show the contrast between how face masks are treated in a society unfamiliar to the west n the cover to co-erse more intrigue towards the publication.
  • *ETHICS - Preface - States the intentions of the publication, explains the topics explored in it. As it's a sensitive topic I wanted to highlight how I am exploring these themes and topics in order to give more understanding and knowledge about the reason for the increased racial crimes towards Asians worldwide in the midst of the pandemic through all the research that i've done. I am not necessarily imposing a certain view on the readers but exploring sides in order to see where both are coming from.
  • Colour Scheme - Each chapter has a different shade/colour - this choice of colour gradient for each chapter can be representative of the 'escalating' discrimination towards Asians and stigmatisation of face masks. As the colour start from green (neutral/ medical like the start of the pandemic) then darker as it goes - reflecting how both the pandemic and racial discrimination not borders and can spread worldwide.
  • Images are pulled from archives and articles that was used in the research and will be credited in the publication.
  • The survey answers and presented in a 'sticker' statement way - giving them more impact rather than in a survey format. They'll be easier to read and more engaging - a complete break from the standard paragraphs in the publication already established.
Thoughts & Reflections:
Refining the publication made it easier for em to develop more on the details like page inserts and rhythm as I realised I needed more pages than I thought in order to keep the pace and layout of the publication. The images also compliment the paragraph nicely as well as the large quotes creating high impact in between pages.
