Fear
1. an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm.
- An irrational fear can be classified as a phobia of something thats unlikely to cause harm.
- Phobia comes from the Greek word 'phobos' meaning fear or horror.
- When sometimes has a phobia they experience intense fear of a certain object of situation.
- Some irrational fears can be really extreme that it stops them from doing daily life things e.g. going out the house
- Some can be non life threatening like fears of spiders, snakes sound of forks against each other.
- Some of the most common phobias or irrational fears are:
- fear of spiders (Arachnophobia)
- fear of snakes (Ophidiophobia)
- fear of heights (Acrophobia)
- fear of situations that are hard to escape (Agoraphobia)
- fear of dogs (Cynophobia)
- fear of social situations (Social phobia)
- fear of thunder and lightning (Astraphobia)
- etc...
Most of the general Internet searches lean to very medical things about fears and phobias so I thought looking at more interactive and opinion sharing sites would give more humane answers which would help me know what are some of people's irrational fears in their daily lives.
REDDIT
The answers on reddit were much more casual and funnier, everyone's descriptions are also very detailed and really unusual and most of them were very unlikely to come true. They were mostly just really weird but hilarious fears that many people could also relate to themselves.
- people were commenting and agreeing with the post, sharing their own similar fears
- most of the fears were unusual and weird
- they're usually detailed that when you read it you'd think WHY? or ME TOO!!!
- make readers feel included and part of something/ feel a connection with someone else that has the same fears as them
- may make users feel that as someone else have the same fear as them that they're not as weird as they think
I've also asked peers about their own fears...
- "When I have lipstick on my teeth and no one tells me"
- "Spilling my coffee"
- "Falling down while dancing"
- "Breaking my ankle"
- "Vomiting in the club in front of everyone"
- "Getting shouted out when I wear a mask"
- "Losing my flat keys cos I have to pay £50 to get new ones"
- "Going to the army, its mandatory for us"
- "The library doors in Laidlaw closing as I walk out"
- "Getting a stomachache from the chicken in Flames"
- "Getting robbed in Hyde Park"
My friends answers were also very personal and very relatable. Similar to the reddit threads they are very much related to one's personal experiences and imagination, but still quite relatable and funny as you'd think of those things as well similarly.
Thoughts & Reflection:
As irrational fears can be looked at from very diverse perspectives like the ones above that are funny/ medical related it will be hard to use all of these information, therefore focusing on a specific theme will be better, to get as much information and ideas from one topic.
