Extended Practice Brief #7: Irrational Fears [Publication Development]

I didn't see the initial layout to work out as well as I thought therefore I took another approach to the design of the publication.
  • I decided to make the size quite irregular to 17.5 cm x 23cm adding a slight more width giving more room for the 2 column grid of the publication It also highlights the quotations much better as I used very bold and contrasting typefaces highlighting their design as well.
  • Using the 2 column grid I decided to frame each paragraph depending on their stance on the topic e.g. if it's talking about effects on the west/east the paragraph will be framed according to its direction. This creates for more space for the pictures but also means that they will rely on the paragraph layout to be grided accordingly. Utilising thw white space on each page can also highlight images accordingly, giving them impact/ or less impact depending on their context. (I have used boxes to indicate roughly where the images will go but are subject to change).
  • I used two contrasting typefaces - Sporting Grotesque (Heading and body text) and Pilowlava (heading) (*velvetyne.fr) - Sporting grotesque has a very soft editorial feel which is nicely contrasted by the 'cell' like appearance of Pilowlava that dominates the page when used. Pilowlava has very interesting structures reminding me of the virus cells, which in a way gives it quite an organic but futuristic look at the same time – like it's alienating the publication.
  • The large quotes work extremely well with the two typefaces, making them really stand out well in the publication. The quotes are also aligned in accordance to their stance in context e.g. subtly with the two large qoutes - one is left aligned as it talks about the western culture whilst one is right aligned as it talks about Asian(east) racism.
  • I also added a new chapter for the survey question and answer before the conclusion "The feelings behind the mask" as I thought it would end the publication nicely on more questioning about the topic to really get readers thinking about the topic itself and make them question themselves about their own beliefs and opinions about it.
