Extended Practice: Making my Presentation

Rather than just showing the overview of my briefs in the presentation I wanted to get across more of why I'm doing this brief [for myself and my practice. Thus I wrote a [subject to change] 'manifesto' which is "DESIGNS THAT EXPLORE CULTURES AND REACHES OUT TO SOCIETY", as I want to create designs that contribute positively to society and opens peoples perspective to cultures and things that they are unfamiliar to in an engaging and inviting way. I realised this while I was writing my COP essay too which was about Asian cultures and tradition in High Fashion, therefore I think this is also the ethos and direction that I want to take my practice to in the future.

Following form that, I included agencies and designers that have influenced my practice such as:
  • FLANEUR MAGAZINE focus on one street in a city in the world is such a fun and interesting concept and not only are their designs informative but it is also very visually engaging and aesthetically highlights the special qualities of the street they are focusing
  • CHECKLAND KINDLYSIDESa very effective and contemporary way to rebrand a company that also effectively caters to their target demographic
  • JAEHO SHIN  – uses differnt mediums in order to create a coherent identity branding for his clients.

BRIEFS

Next, I talked about the briefs that I have chosen which reflects the manifesto that I created as well as drawn from the influences that I got from the designers and agencies that I've chosen.
  • COMPETITION BRIEFS [X4]
    • STARPACK – Sustainable Packaging
    • RSA – 'A Platform for Joy' (I can take some points and inspiration from the LNER pitch presentation that we did last year as it's in the same topic)
    • YCN [x2]
      • UKGreetings – Create greeting card designs
      • Fredigoni X Oliver Bonas – Design packaging for their new candle collection with Fredigoni paper.
  • INTERNAL COLLABORATION – continuing the publication collab that I did with Jocel fromResponsive last year as we actually got some feedback from people who got some of the copies therefore it would be great to continue and do it again as people were actually interested with it.
  • EXTERNAL COLLABORATION [X2]
    • Uni of Leeds (Art & Design student) – create a publication showcasing their photographs from their personal travel project which will be part of their portfolio
    • Photography X Graphic Design Personal Branding – collaborating with a 3rd year Photography student to create their personal branding.
  • INDEPENDENT & RESEARCH LED BRIEFS –
    • Baybayin [Filipino Pre-colonial writing system] – create a publication to celebrate the forgotten and newly revived writing system from the Philippines.
    • Irrational Fears – explore the idea of 'weird' or 'unusual' fears that I have and other people may relate to.
  • LIVE BRIEF [with Nanyang Polytechnic University]

TIMETABLE
  • I'm aiming to allocate at least 2 weeks for each brief, focusing on one brief at a time [however longer briefs may need to also be done on the side e.g. one day a week or a couple of hours a day], however this is just a general timetable that I set myself in order to get a clearer understanding of which briefs i need to focus on on particular times.
  • Considering I also have to do a 2 week placement, I'm thinking of doing them in the later months e.g. March or April as I still need to send emails to agencies  and companies at the moment.

Thoughts & Reflection:

I think this is quite a solid presentation and understanding of what I am up to right now with Extended Practice, making the presentation also helped refresh myself with my intentions for this module and my overall goal by the ed of this year which is to curate a portfolio which showcase my beliefs and skills as a designer which will help put myself out to agencies and companies that aligned with my beliefs and manifesto.
