3PM: 'See you at Noon' Research

"See you at noon" = "See you at 3PM"

2,000 years ago (before 1656) the Roman Empire told the time through ringing a town bell, where the hours of the day were counted differently. (An hour meant "one twelfth of the day" with 2 cycles of 12 hours starting from sunrise).  It is then divided into 4 periods of 3 hours each e.g. 1st period (Prime), 6 AM, 3rd hour (Terce), 9 AM, 6th hour (Sext), 12 AM, and 9nth hour (None) at 3PM. (nona hora)

It was the early Catholic church that used this pattern in their own daily schedule and recite their prayers in those hours. But as traditions changed in the church, "None" became earlier (at 12pm) and by mid-1200 noon became known as 'midday'.

(1) As the meaning of the phrase/ word is heavily referencing Catholicism/ religion I thought that it would be effective to reference this aspect through the layout of the design, similar to Catholic paintings in churches, I think that it gives it quite 'cult'-ish feel as well which fits the concept that we are going for. I think it may also be a great way to introduce our topic and concept in general, also creating an identity that we can use throughout the presentation. Though we said we wanted a typography heavy design, while developing the poster, I thought it was more effective to showcase the illustration more to emphasise the cult feel. Referencing the 2 cycles of the time collection as well as the 'prayer tradition aspect with the "divine mercy hands" and the circles indicating the 4 periods I think it creates a strong intriguing aspect to the design. Though it still has a very strong typography aspect to it, as I choose a very bold type which I think highlights the concept we are going for. The type has hints of gothic inspirations with its strong bold serifs as well as wide stems and unproportionally small curves. I think it also effectively display quite a satiric yet serious style which in combination with the overall structure and illustrations in the design completes the concept and style that we want to achieve.

(2) Leading the opposite mood from the first design, I used cooler tones and colours to emphasise a more mysterious aspect to the concept of 3PM. I also create more abstract and minimal illustrations that hints at the meaning of the word, creating more suspense and provoke more people to know what it possibly means. This also gives room for wider and more interesting interpretations of the word as well. I opted for a mix of serif and sans serif font in order to create balance between the minimal illustrations and layout. In addition, I think the mix and balance of the design elements in a way helps highlight each aspect as in a way, despite the simplicity of the design.

Thoughts & Reflections:

I think that I've effectively created designs which would be helpful in showcasing our presentation in the cult-ish bizzare way that we are intending to do it. I'm also quite happy with how they turned out as they incorporate aspects of research in a way that isn't too direct yet not to abstract either yet can still intrigue people to know more.

Tomorrow were going to show our design to the group and hopefully we decide a definitive direction to how we are going to create and design our presentation in accordance to the additional research that we've done individually and collectively as a group
