First Live Brief: 'Something More' Live Brief and Talk (SO What?)

Back on that grind again...

Today we met two creatives from 'Something More' and learnt a little bit about them and their creative agency. They presented how they work as a team and the the spectrum of design work that they've done in the past couple of years. For today's live brief that they's set out for us (So What? we are to create a 5 minute presentation (to be presented this Friday) about a very mundane word. Various ways we could tackle this is through making the presentation: empowering, funny, surprising etc. They also gave us an example of what kind of presentation it could be, giving themselves the same parameters we do e.g. a week, random word. Their presentation on 'kerbs' was really effective in creating interest towards such a boring almost 'non-existent' part of our lives and consciousness. I loved how they managed to make it very compelling while using facts about kerbs in a way that would make the audience have an interest towards it, keeping them within the presentation; as  well as their storytelling, phase and structure of the whole presentation; from the introduction to the problem and solutions presented about kerbs, it was a very tasteful and creative way of talking about the topic.

Taking away from their presentation, I'd also like to have a very well structured presentation which takes the audiences on a clear and creative presentation which would hopefully show how we could present such a mundane word in a very interesting way.

I've grouped with Jocel, Georgia, Kristen and Libby with the word "3PM' to work with.  We first started to brainstorm our known connotations, meaning etc. about the word e.g. siesta, three o'clock prayer. We found the idea of having an 'afternoon slump' quite interesting within the word topic and went on to discuss ideas such as structuring the presentation like a 'conspiracy theory video', at first we wanted to create a straightforward funny, satiric presentation however, it developed to a more serious, mysterious, in-depth talk about the word which in turn would be quite ridiculous to the point of being hilarious. Researching further in the topic itself we decided to structure the content of the presentation as:

1) Intro to the word: What is 3pm, how did it start?
2) Time (relating to the afternoon slump - sleep chemicals *)
3) Interviews, Articles, *Wonder/Mystique - "see your at noon' = 'see you at 3pm' before 1656
4) theories - religious aspects etc.  WHERE WE PROPER 'INVESTIGATE' about the word.
5) BUT WHY?? - 'PM' meaning etc.

Jocel's notes as we discussed

Thoughts & Reflections:

I think today went quite well, we did have some 'slump' (no pun intended), as I felt that we were getting overwhelmed with all the ideas that we have that we didn't know were to start or how to structure our content in order for it to make sense. Also, as I felt that we started to think of the visuals frist as we discussed I felt that the content and research was too vague, maybe that's why we were getting overwhelmed as we  didn't know how to make sense of the visuals in the first place and we didn't have enough content to justify and describe the visuals that we envisioned. We decided to gather more research and information to help present the word as well as our visual ideas and decided to create a small poster, gathering our research and visual ideas to one in order to have a soft surface idea we can all talk about and present to each other tomorrow.
